KU Student Produces Documentary on How Sports Gambling is Becoming a Part of College Life

Mobile betting normalizes gambling for students, raising financial risks and replacing saving

Three years ago, gambling for any KU student required a 21+ student to drive thirty minutes to the closest casino, today students of all ages gamble from a phone at any time of the day.

Sam Walker, a KU student, produced a documentary on the effects of sports betting. Walker created it to highlight how common gambling is among college students.

He was inspired by “Gambling Away Stability” a study co-authored by KU Professors Kevin Pisciotta and Justin Balthrop, which analyzed credit card data from over 200,000 U.S. households and found that ease of access to online platforms has made Americans more financially unstable.
